Steering Wheel Spiral Cable Assembly (Clock Spring) ?
This steering column spiral cable is required to keep the steering wheelβs electrical circuits connected while the wheel turns left and right. It sits behind the steering wheel and works like a flat ribbon cable wound in a housing, smoothly winding/unwinding to carry signals for the airbag, horn, and steering wheel buttons. β
How It Works
Inside the unit, the flexible conductor rotates with the steering wheel while the outer case stays aligned with the column. This design prevents wires from twisting and snapping, keeping constant contact for safety and comfort features.
Symptoms of a Faulty Spiral Cable
- Airbag warning light stays on or flashes β οΈ
- Horn stops working or works only sometimes
- Steering wheel buttons fail (audio/cruise/phone)
- Clicking/rubbing noise when turning the wheel
What Happens If It Breaks
If the internal ribbon tears, the driver airbag circuit can lose connection, which may disable airbag deployment. You may also lose horn function and steering wheel controls, reducing safety and convenience. Replacing a damaged unit restores reliable signal flow and proper restraint-system readiness.
