VVT Cam Phaser Position Sensor

This precision engine sensor tracks the exact position of the camshaft so the ECU can control valve timing. It is vital for clean starts, strong mid-range torque, good fuel economy, and low emissions on many modern 16V petrol engines.

Why this part is needed

Variable valve timing needs accurate cam angle data. With a correct signal, the ECU advances or retards the cam phaser depending on load and rpm. You get smooth idle, quick throttle response, reduced fuel use, and reliable cold starts.

How it works ⚙️

Inside is a Hall-effect element that reads a toothed target on the cam. As teeth pass, it outputs a clean digital waveform. The ECU compares this to the crank sensor to calculate true cam phase, then commands the oil control valve in the phaser. The unit uses oil-resistant housing, a sealed 3‑pin connector, and an O-ring to keep leaks out. It mounts on the cylinder head; replacement is usually one bolt and a plug-in.

What happens if it fails ❗

  • Hard starting, stalling, or rough idle
  • Flat acceleration and higher fuel consumption
  • VVT disabled; phaser held in a safe default position
  • Check Engine light (codes like P0340/P0016)
  • Increased emissions, possible catalytic stress

Tech tips ✅

Always inspect wiring first—brittle loom or oil in the connector can copy sensor faults. Fit an OE-grade unit, clean the O-ring seat, and torque gently to avoid housing cracks.
