Rear Tailgate Outside Handle Assembly (Left Side)
This exterior tailgate handle is the part you grab to open the rear hatch/boot from the outside. It’s needed for safe, quick access to the cargo area, especially when your hands are full . On many Hyundai & Kia tailgates, this handle also helps position the release lever correctly so the latch can unlock smoothly.
How It Works
When you pull the handle, it transfers your motion to the tailgate latch mechanism (by lever/cable or switch-to-actuator depending on model). That movement releases the locking pawl, allowing the tailgate to pop open. A good handle should feel solid, return back cleanly, and keep water and dirt away from the inner latch area ️.
What Happens If It’s Broken
A cracked or loose handle may not engage the latch at all, leaving the tailgate stuck closed. In other cases it can jam, feel floppy, or cause intermittent opening, which is a security risk .
