How it works
A thermostatic element senses evaporator outlet conditions and moves a needle to meter refrigerant. It drops high‑pressure liquid to a low‑pressure mist, maintaining correct superheat so the evaporator absorbs maximum heat without liquid returning to the compressor.
What happens if it fails ⚠️
Stuck closed: warm air, low suction pressure, frost at the inlet, hissing, slow cooldown. Stuck open: fluctuating temps, high low‑side pressure, gurgling, flooded evaporator, potential compressor damage. Both cause rapid cycling and poor climate control.
Installation tips
