Subaru A/C Thermal Expansion Valve (TXV) ❄️
This precision valve controls how much refrigerant enters the evaporator. It keeps cabin air cold, prevents freeze-up, and protects the compressor. If your A/C blows warm at idle, cools poorly in traffic, or cycles too often, the TXV may be the cause.
Why you need it
The valve meters refrigerant based on load and temperature. It maintains proper superheat so the evaporator can absorb heat efficiently. With a healthy TXV, you get fast cool-down, steady vent temps, and longer compressor life.
How it works
A sensing bulb monitors evaporator outlet temperature. Inside, a diaphragm and spring move a needle that opens or closes the orifice. This balances pressure and temperature to deliver just the right refrigerant flow across driving conditions.
When it fails ⚠️
Stuck closed: weak cooling, frosty inlet, low suction pressure. Stuck open: inconsistent cooling, high suction, possible evaporator flood and liquid slugging that can harm the compressor. Debris or moisture can also cause clogging and corrosion.
Tech tips for install
Always replace O-rings, add correct PAG oil, evacuate to deep vacuum, and recharge by spec. Flush lines if contaminated, and replace the receiver/drier or desiccant bag for best results.
