Steering Rack Dust Boot (Protective Bellows)
This rubber bellows is a small but critical steering system spare part used on many Hyundai and KIA models. Its main job is to seal and protect the inner steering rack area where the tie rod moves in and out. Without a healthy boot, the steering gear is exposed to road dirt, water, and salt οΈ.
Why this part is needed
The steering rack has polished shafts and sliding joints that must stay clean and lightly lubricated. The boot works like a flexible cover, keeping grease in and contamination out. It also helps reduce wear on the rack seals, extending the life of the whole steering assembly.
How it works
When you turn the steering wheel, the rack shifts left and right. The bellows expands and compresses with this movement while staying clamped at both ends. This creates a tight barrier that follows the motion without tearing .
If the boot is cracked or torn
A damaged boot lets grit enter and grease escape. Over time you may notice steering stiffness, clicking, uneven steering return, or even rack leaks. If ignored, the steering rack can wear internally and require costly replacement β οΈ.
