A pair of sealed U-joints and a splined shaft create a compact, collapsible link. Pinch-bolt yokes clamp onto the column and gearbox input. Properly greased splines and tight bearings keep steering smooth and direct.

Clunking, notchiness, free play, wandering, crooked wheel, and vibration. A seized joint can bind steering; stripped splines or a cracked yoke can cause sudden loss of control and rapid tire wear.
