Rubber Steering Column Coupling (Flex Disc)

This precision rubber joint links the steering wheel shaft to the intermediate shaft/rack, filtering shocks and road buzz while keeping the wheel feel tight and direct. Built from oil‑resistant elastomer with reinforced sleeves, it delivers quiet operation and reliable torque transfer for everyday driving and spirited use.

Why this part is needed

Over time, heat, ozone, and fluid contamination dry and crack the rubber. Replacing the coupling restores crisp on‑center feel, reduces vibration, and protects the rack and universal joints from impact loads.

How it works

The flexible disc acts as a torsional damper. It allows minute shear movement to absorb kickback while keeping both shafts precisely aligned. Steel bushings guide the bolts, preventing metal‑to‑metal contact and maintaining consistent steering geometry.

What happens if it’s worn or broken ⚠️

Expect play at the wheel, clunks when turning slowly, wandering at speed, and increased vibration. Severe failure can lead to intermittent or lost steering input—replace at the first signs of cracking or excessive free play.

Tech tips

  • Align index marks and torque bolts to spec.
  • Keep oil/grease off the rubber.
  • Inspect intermediate shaft splines while accessible.
