Rear Anti-Skid Wheel Speed Sensor βοΈ
This rear wheel speed sensor is a key input for your ABS/anti-skid system. It is needed to measure how fast the rear wheel is rotating and help the control unit prevent wheel lock-up during braking, especially on wet roads, gravel, or sudden stops.
How It Works β
The sensor reads a tone ring (reluctor) on the hub/axle and creates an electrical signal that changes with wheel speed. The ABS module compares signals from all wheels; if one rear wheel slows too quickly, the system reduces brake pressure in pulses to keep traction and steering control.
When the Sensor Is Failing or Broken β οΈ
A damaged sensor, cracked wiring, rusted mounting, or debris on the pickup can cause wrong speed readings. This may switch on the ABS/SLIP warning light, disable anti-skid function, increase stopping distance, and lead to rear wheel lock on hard braking. In some cases you may feel ABS pump not engaging when it should.
Common Signs
- ABS light stays on
- Intermittent traction control operation
- Unstable braking on slippery surfaces
- Fault codes for rear wheel speed signal
