Rear Anti-Skid Wheel Speed Sensor Assembly

This rear wheel speed sensor is a key input for the ABS/anti-skid system. It’s needed to keep the brake controller “aware” of real wheel rotation, so the vehicle can stay stable during hard braking, wet roads, loose gravel, and emergency maneuvers ??.

How It Works

The sensor reads a toothed ring (tone ring) on the hub/axle and converts wheel movement into an electrical signal. The ABS module compares all wheels in real time. When it detects a rear wheel slowing too fast, it quickly modulates brake pressure to prevent lock-up, helping maintain steering control and traction.

When You Should Replace It

If the sensor fails, the ABS/anti-skid light may turn on, ABS can be disabled, and braking becomes more prone to wheel lock—especially on slippery surfaces ⚠️. You may also notice erratic ABS activation, longer stopping distance, or stored fault codes related to rear wheel speed.

What Happens If It’s Broken

A damaged sensor or wiring can send no signal or a noisy signal. That can lead to loss of anti-skid support, reduced stability control, and uneven braking behavior—putting extra stress on tires and brake components.
