Rear ABS / Anti-Skid Wheel Speed Sensor Assembly ?βš™οΈ

This rear wheel speed sensor is a key safety part for ABS and anti-skid control. It is needed to constantly measure how fast the rear wheel is turning, so the brake and stability system can react in milliseconds. Without an accurate signal, the car cannot properly prevent wheel lock-up or unwanted sliding, especially on wet roads, gravel, or during hard braking.

How It Works βœ…

The sensor reads a rotating tone ring (reluctor) near the hub and converts wheel movement into an electrical pulse. The ABS/ESC module compares all wheel speeds; if one wheel slows too fast, it reduces brake pressure and may adjust traction control to keep the vehicle stable and steerable.

When It Fails ⚠️

A damaged sensor or corroded connector can cause ABS and stability warning lights, loss of ABS function, longer stopping distance, and unpredictable traction control. In some cases you may feel brake pedal pulsation disappears, or the system may intervene at the wrong time due to false readings.

Common Causes

  • Road salt and moisture in the plug
  • Sensor tip contamination from metal dust
  • Wiring damage near the suspension
  • Hub/tone ring rust or impact
