Steering Rack Dust Boot β€” Heavy‑Duty Bellows for Rugged Use

This flexible bellows shields the rack-and-pinion from mud, water, sand, and road salt. It keeps grease where it belongs and blocks contaminants that grind away seals and the rack shaft. Off‑road or highway, a fresh boot is cheap insurance for precise steering and long rack life.

Why you need it ️

Without a tight boot, the inner tie rod and rack teeth are exposed. Moisture causes corrosion, grit accelerates wear, and steering feel degrades. Replacing the boot prevents costly rack rebuilds.

How it works βš™οΈ

The elastomer bellows clamps to the rack housing on one side and the inner tie rod on the other. As you turn the wheel, it expands and compresses, venting air while sealing out dirt and keeping lubricant in.

What happens if it’s broken ⚠️

Tears or cracks let in water and debris. Expect play in the steering, squeaks, knocks over bumps, uneven tire wear, and possible power steering fluid leaks as seals fail. Left unchecked, the rack shaft pits and the assembly may seize.

Tech tips

  • Replace in pairs; use new clamps
  • Do not twist the bellows during install
  • Inspect inner tie rod and rack seals
