Steering Rack Dust Boot (Rack Bellow)

This flexible gaiter seals the rack-and-pinion from dust, water, and road grit, keeping grease in and wear out. It protects the inner tie rod and rack seals, keeps steering smooth, and extends the life of the steering gear. A healthy boot means precise response, quieter operation, and safer driving.

Why this part is needed

Without a proper boot, contaminants attack the rack teeth, bushes, and seals. Corrosion and abrasive wear quickly create play in the system, leading to vague steering and leaks. Replacing a boot in time is far cheaper than a complete rack.

How it works

The accordion bellow expands and compresses with steering travel. One end clamps to the rack housing, the other to the inner tie rod. It allows full stroke while keeping the chamber sealed. Oil‑resistant elastomer and molded ribs manage movement and pressure changes.

What happens if it’s broken

Tears or loose clamps let water in: rusted rack, heavy steering, fluid seepage, knocking on bumps, poor return‑to‑center, and uneven tire wear. Ignoring it can lead to failed inspections and an expensive rack replacement.

Service tips

Install with new clamps, add fresh grease under the boot, center the rack, torque to spec, and check wheel alignment after.
