Steering Sliding Yoke Assembly
This steering sliding yoke is a key link in the steering column, allowing the shaft to extend and retract smoothly while keeping a tight, accurate drive to the steering gear. It’s needed to handle body flex, small alignment changes, and column movement without sending vibration into the cabin ?.
How It Works
Inside the joint, a splined sliding section transfers steering torque while still permitting controlled in-and-out travel. When you turn the wheel, the splines lock rotationally, so steering input stays precise. The sliding action helps maintain correct shaft length during suspension and chassis movement, reducing stress on bearings and couplers.
What Happens If It’s Worn or Broken
A damaged yoke can cause steering play, clunking noises, stiff or notchy turning, or vibration through the wheel. In severe cases, spline wear may lead to intermittent loss of steering transfer—an immediate safety risk ⚠️. Continued driving can also damage the steering column joints and rack input.
Signs You Should Replace It
- Clicking or clunk when turning
- Loose steering feel
- Binding during steering return
- Visible spline corrosion or slack
