Front Differential Lock Selector Fork βοΈ
Why this part matters π
This small but critical fork engages the front axleβs locking function so both wheels pull together. It ensures clean, positive movement of the sliding collar, giving you maximum traction on mud, sand, snow, and steep trails. If you rely on 4x4 performance or tow in tough terrain, a precise selector fork keeps driveline stress low and engagement smooth.
How it works π οΈ
Mounted on the selector shaft inside the front differential, the fork straddles the collar groove. When the vacuum/electric actuator moves the shaft, the fork glides the dog-clutch sleeve along the splines to couple the side gear and carrier, locking the diff. Hardened steel tines and wear pads guide the sleeve, then a spring/actuator returns it to unlock when commanded.
If it fails β
Common signs include a blinking diff-lock light, no engagement, slow or partial lock, grinding or clunk when loaded, or the lock popping out. You may see tire scrub in corners, metal flakes in oil, and even ABS/VSC alerts. Continued use can round the sleeve, chip gears, overheat bearings, and leave you stuck off-road π§.
Quality and install tips
Choose heat-treated OE-geometry steel. Inspect the collar groove, actuator, fork pads, and shaft endplay. Renew seals, set carrier preload, refill with GL-5 75W-90, and test engagement on stands before trail duty.
