Rear Differential Side Gear Thrust Washer ?
This precision washer sits between the side gear and the carrier in the rear differential. It controls endplay, keeps gear mesh stable, and spreads thrust loads so the side gear rotates smoothly on a thin oil film. Made from hardened, wear-resistant steel, it’s a selective-fit shim that restores correct clearance and protects the carrier housing.
Why it’s needed
Proper thrust control prevents gear rock and noise. With the right thickness, the rear differential maintains smooth cornering, quiet operation, and even torque delivery to both wheels. It also reduces shock loads on the cross-shaft, spider gears, and ring-and-pinion.
How it works ⚙️
The washer sets micrometer-level side gear end float. As the gears transfer torque, the washer absorbs axial force and keeps the gear faces parallel, maintaining correct backlash and oil film. This keeps the differential quiet and durable under towing or off-road use.
What happens if it’s worn or broken
Expect clunk on take-off, humming or whine on coast, harsh turns, metal glitter in gear oil, and accelerated wear of spider gears and bearings. Left unchecked, it can score the carrier, chip gear teeth, and contaminate the whole axle—leading to costly rebuilds.
Tech tips ?
- Measure side gear endplay and select correct thickness.
- Inspect side gear thrust surfaces and cross-shaft.
- Replace in pairs; clean magnet and housing.
- Refill with GL-5 75W-90/80W-90; torque per service manual.
