Front Differential Side Gear for Toyota Front Axle
This internal drivetrain gear sits inside the front axle differential and is essential for smooth power transfer to the left/right axle shafts. It helps your Toyota turn safely by allowing the wheels to rotate at different speeds while still delivering torque where itβs needed. βοΈ
Why this part is needed
When you corner, one front wheel must spin faster than the other. The side gear works with the spider (pinion) gears to balance that speed difference, preventing tire scrub and heavy stress on CV joints and bearings.
How it works
The axle shaft splines engage with the side gear. As the ring gear drives the differential case, the side gear rotates with the carrier in a straight line. During turns, it rotates relative to the pinion gears to allow speed variation between wheels.
What happens if itβs worn or broken
A damaged side gear can cause clunking on take-off, clicking in turns, metal flakes in gear oil, vibration, or even loss of drive to one wheel. In severe cases it can chew the differential case and ruin the ring & pinion setβan expensive rebuild. ππ§
