Front Differential Side Gear (Front Axle)
This precision drivetrain gear sits inside the front axle differential and helps transfer engine torque to the left and right front wheels. Itβs needed to let both wheels pull smoothly while still allowing a speed difference in turns .
How It Works
When power enters the differential, the internal gears mesh together to split torque between the axle shafts. This side gear engages with the axle spline and rotates with the shaft. During cornering, it works with the pinion (spider) gears to let one wheel rotate faster than the other without binding βοΈ.
Why Replacement Matters
A worn or damaged unit can cause poor gear mesh, backlash changes, and unstable power delivery. You may notice clicking or clunking on takeoff, vibration under load, or metal particles in the oil οΈ.
If Itβs Broken
If the gear chips or strips, the axle may lose drive, the differential can lock or slip, and internal debris can destroy bearings and the ring & pinion. Continued driving risks a full front diff failure and expensive housing damage β.
