Front Differential Spider Gear Set ?οΈ
Why this part is needed
Inside the front differential, the spider gears let the left and right front wheels turn at different speeds while still sharing engine torque. This is vital when cornering, driving on mixed grip roads, or using 4WD/AWD systems. A healthy spider gear set keeps steering smooth, reduces drivetrain stress, and protects the ring & pinion from shock loads.
How it works
The gears sit in the differential carrier and rotate on a cross shaft. When both wheels have equal traction, they mainly spin as a unit. During a turn, the spider gears βwalkβ to allow one axle to speed up while the other slows down, keeping power flowing without wheel bind.
What happens if itβs worn or broken β οΈ
Damaged gears can cause clicking or clunking in turns, metal shavings in oil, vibration, and harsh engagement. If ignored, it may lock the differential, strip teeth, or destroy the carrierβsometimes leading to loss of drive to the front wheels and expensive housing damage.
