Camshaft Timing Sensor (Engine Position Pickup)

Why this part is needed

This sensor is a key input for the ECU to know exactly where the camshaft is. It helps the engine control ignition timing and fuel injection timing, especially during cold start, idle, and acceleration. Without accurate cam timing feedback, modern Hyundai/Kia engines cannot run clean and efficient.

How it works

Mounted near the camshaft, it reads a trigger wheel/reluctor and creates an electrical signal (pulse). The ECU compares this signal with the crankshaft signal to confirm valve timing and cylinder phase. This allows smooth starting, stable idle, proper VVT operation, and lower emissions.

What happens if it’s broken

A failing unit can cause hard starting, misfire, rough idle, hesitation, poor fuel economy, limp mode, and a check engine light. In some cases the engine may stall or refuse to start because the ECU can’t identify cam position correctly.
