This sensor is a key input for the engine control unit. It detects the exact Top Dead Center (TDC) position of the crank/trigger point so the ECU can fire injection and ignition at the right moment. When timing data is clean, the engine starts quicker, idles steadier, and pulls better under load.
Why this part is needed β
Modern Hyundai/Kia systems rely on a precise reference signal to synchronize fuel and spark. A stable TDC signal prevents misfires, protects the catalytic system, and keeps fuel economy in check.
How it works ?
Inside the unit is a Hall-effect element that reacts to a rotating metal target. Each pass creates a digital on/off pulse. The ECU reads these pulses to calculate engine speed and position, then adjusts ignition and injection timing in real time.
What happens if it fails ?
A weak or missing signal can cause hard starting, sudden stalling, rough idle, loss of power, and random misfire codes. In many cases the engine may crank but not start because the ECU cannot confirm position reference.
