This oxygen (O2) sensor is a key part of the fuel and emission control system. It is needed to help the ECU “see” how much oxygen is left in the exhaust after combustion. With that data, the engine can keep the air/fuel mix close to perfect for smooth power, good fuel economy, and clean emissions ✅.
How It Works
The sensor sits in the exhaust stream and generates a signal based on oxygen content. The ECU uses this live feedback to adjust injector pulse and, on many setups, to protect the catalytic converter from running too rich or too lean. A healthy sensor reacts fast and keeps fuel trims stable.
What Happens If It Fails
If the sensor is weak, slow, or dead, the ECU may switch to a safe default map. Common results include higher fuel consumption, rough idle, hesitation, poor acceleration, and a glowing check engine light. Long-term driving with a bad O2 sensor can overheat and damage the catalytic converter—an expensive repair ??.
