Oxygen Sensor Assembly (Upstream/Downstream O2)
This sensor is a key part of the exhaust and fuel control system. It measures how much oxygen is left in the exhaust gases, then sends a signal to the ECU so the engine can fine-tune the air-fuel mixture. β
A healthy signal helps keep power smooth, fuel economy strong, and emissions low.
Why this part is needed
Modern engines rely on precise mixture control. The ECU uses the oxygen sensor feedback to correct fueling in real time, especially during warm running and closed-loop operation. π§
How it works
Inside the sensor is a heated element that reaches operating temperature quickly. As exhaust oxygen changes, the sensor voltage/resistance changes. The ECU reads these changes and adjusts injector pulse and, on some setups, supports catalyst monitoring. β»οΈ
What happens if itβs broken
A weak or dead sensor can cause rich/lean running, higher fuel use, rough idle, hesitation, catalytic converter stress, and an illuminated check engine light. β οΈ In severe cases you may notice poor acceleration and increased exhaust smell.
