Crankshaft Speed & Position Sensor

This engine sensor is essential because the ECU must always know the exact crankshaft angle and RPM to fire spark and inject fuel at the right moment. Without a clean crank signal, modern Hyundai/KIA engines cannot time ignition correctly, and starting becomes unreliable.

How it works βš™οΈ

The sensor reads a toothed wheel on the crankshaft (or reluctor ring). As teeth pass the tip, it creates an electrical pulse pattern. The ECU converts these pulses into engine speed and position data, then synchronizes fuel injection, ignition timing, and misfire detection. Accurate feedback also helps stable idle and smooth acceleration.

When the sensor fails

A weak or broken sensor may cause hard start, sudden stalling when hot, loss of power, rough idle, and random misfire codes. In many cases the engine may crank but not start at all, because the ECU β€œcan’t see” the crankshaft. Prolonged driving with a failing signal can increase fuel use and strain the catalytic converter.

Why replace it

Fresh signal quality restores correct timing control, reduces cut-outs, and helps the ECU keep consistent performance in all temperatures.
