Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor β€” precise spark and fuel control βš™οΈ

Why you need it

The CKP sensor is the engine’s timing eye. It tells the ECU exactly where the crank is and how fast it spins. With this signal, the ECU fires the spark at the right moment and injects the correct fuel. A healthy CKP gives quick starts, smooth idle, clean acceleration, and good fuel economy.

How it works

A magnetic/Hall element in the sensor reads the teeth on the crank’s reluctor wheel. As teeth pass the tip, the sensor creates pulses. The ECU counts these pulses to calculate RPM and crank angle, then syncs ignition and injection with the cam signal. The result is accurate timing across all loads and temperatures.

What happens when it fails

Common signs: long crank or no-start, sudden stall when hot, rough idle, misfire, poor power, bad fuel use, tach dropouts, and codes like P0335–P0339. If the signal is lost, the ECU can’t time sparkβ€”engine may die or not start at all. Intermittent faults can damage the catalytic converter due to unburnt fuel.

Tech notes for installation βœ…

  • Inspect the connector and wiring; keep away from exhaust heat.
  • Lightly oil the O-ring; seat sensor fully and tighten to spec.
  • Keep the tip clean; maintain correct air gap to the reluctor.
  • Clear codes and perform CKP relearn if the ECU requires it.
