Carrier Side Bearing for Nissan Final Drive โ๏ธ
Why you need it
This differential side bearing supports the carrier and keeps the ring gear lined up with the pinion. It holds correct backlash and preload, spreads load smoothly, and cuts friction and noise. A healthy bearing keeps torque transfer clean, protects gears and seals, and makes the rear axle quiet and durable.
How it works ๏ธ
On each side of the differential sits a tapered roller bearing. Preload is set with shims or adjusters, then the assembly runs in gear oil. The rollers handle both radial and axial forces during launch, cruise, and cornering. Correct preload keeps tooth contact centered, reduces heat, and prevents wear of the ring and pinion.
What happens if it fails โ
Expect humming or growling that changes with speed, a throttle whine, play at the flanges, metal glitter in the oil, heat, and oil leaks. If ignored, the gear mesh shifts, teeth chip or pit, seals burn, and the axle may seize or lose drive. Long-term driving can destroy the ring and pinion and damage shafts and bearings nearby.
Pro install notes
Replace bearings in pairs, set preload with an inchโpound torque wrench, verify backlash with a dial indicator, mark gear pattern, and refill with fresh GLโ5 oil. Renew side seals after setup.
