Side Gear for Differential βοΈ
This side gear is a key internal part of the differential. It is needed to transfer engine torque from the differential carrier directly to the axle shaft, letting the left and right wheels rotate at different speeds while cornering. Without this controlled speed difference, the drivetrain would bind, tires would scrub, and handling would feel harsh.
How It Works
The gearβs splines lock onto the axle shaft, while its teeth mesh with the spider (pinion) gears. When you drive straight, both sides share load smoothly. In a turn, the spider gears rotate on their pin, allowing one side gear to speed up and the other to slow down, keeping traction and stability predictable.
If the Gear Is Worn or Broken
Damage or heavy wear can cause clicking/knocking during turns, vibration under load, metal flakes in gear oil, and uneven power delivery. If it fails fully, the axle may stop driving, leading to sudden loss of propulsion and possible differential housing damageβan expensive repair if ignored.
