Side Drive Gear for Nissan 4x4 Axle Systems ⚙️
This side gear is a key internal component inside the differential, working with the spider gears to transfer torque from the ring gear to the axle shafts. It is needed to keep both wheels driving smoothly, especially when turning or when one wheel has less grip. In tough off-road use, it helps the drivetrain share load without sudden shock or binding.
How It Works
Mounted on the axle side, the gear meshes with the pinion (spider) gears. When the vehicle goes straight, it turns with the differential case and delivers equal drive. During a turn, it allows one axle to rotate faster than the other while still maintaining controlled power flow. Correct tooth profile and hardness prevent chatter and uneven wear.
If the Gear Is Worn or Broken
A damaged side gear can cause clunking, whining, metallic grinding, or jerky cornering. Severe wear may create metal flakes in the oil, overheat the differential, and destroy bearings and the ring & pinion set. In worst cases, you can lose drive to the wheels and risk axle or housing damage.
