Hypoid Ring & Pinion for Subaru AWD Final Drive βοΈ
This matched hypoid pair restores the final drive in your AWD drivetrain. It is needed when the original gears are worn, pitted, or noisy. Fresh gears bring back quiet operation, correct gear ratio, and smooth torque delivery to the wheels, protecting the rest of the differential.
How it works ?
The pinion receives torque from the transmission and drives the large ring gear bolted to the differential carrier. Their spiral-cut teeth mesh below center (hypoid), allowing high torque transfer with low noise. Correct preload, backlash, and contact pattern keep the oil film stable and the teeth cool under load.
Why you need it ?
Over time, poor lubrication, towing, or aggressive launches create wear and micro-pitting. That leads to gear whine on acceleration or coast, heat buildup, and metal debris. Replacing the pair prevents cascading damage to bearings, seals, and the carrier.
What happens if itβs broken β
- High-pitched whine, rumble, or chatter in turns
- Vibration and hot, burnt-smelling oil
- Oil leaks from overloaded seals and bearings
- Strip-out of teeth, sudden loss of drive, or wheel lock in severe cases
Tech notes ?οΈ
Always install as a matched pair. Set pinion depth, bearing preload, and backlash with proper tools and pattern compound. Replace crush sleeve/shims, bearings, and seals; fill with GL-5 75W-90. Break-in with gentle load and cool-down cycles.
