Shift Position Indicator Housing for Automatic Gearbox
This precision housing protects the selector sensor that tells the vehicle which gear you chose (P, R, N, D). It keeps the signal clean and accurate so the dash display, starter interlock, reverse lamps, and transmission control all work together. Why it’s needed ✅
Modern autos rely on a stable PRNDL signal. The transmission control module, engine ECU, and safety systems use it to allow cranking in Park/Neutral, engage correct shift maps, activate backup lights, and manage hill/creep logic. A worn or cracked housing lets moisture or play distort the reading, causing drivability issues.
How it works
As you move the shift lever, a cam inside the sealed body sweeps a contact track or Hall sensor. The unit outputs a calibrated electrical signal through a plug connector. The ECU translates that into gear position, then commands solenoids and updates the cluster. Proper alignment during install (usually in Neutral) ensures exact indexing.
What happens if it’s broken ⚠️
No-start in Park or Neutral, wrong PRND display, harsh or delayed shifts, reverse lights inoperative, limp mode, and fault codes (commonly selector range errors). Fuel economy can drop and the transmission may protect itself with limited gears.
