Transmission Thrust Race (Position 5) for Toyota A/T βοΈ
Why this part is needed
This hardened race provides a precision running surface for the thrust bearing that controls axial loads in the automatic transmission. It keeps the planetary set and clutch drums aligned, stabilizes endplay, reduces friction, and helps maintain clean, crisp gear changes. Replacing a worn race restores shift quality, protects gears and clutches, and extends transmission life.
How it works
Mounted between rotating members (gear/drum) and the case, the race teams with a needle/roller thrust bearing to carry axial force during upshifts and downshifts. Its ground surface holds the oil film, keeps clearances tight, and centers the torque path under load. Heat-treated steel and fine finish prevent brinelling and metal transfer in high-temperature, high-RPM use.
If the race is damaged
Expect increased endplay, delayed or harsh shifts, shudder on takeoff, whining in lower gears, metallic debris in the pan, and hot ATF. Severe pitting or bluing can collapse the bearing, grinding the drum/gear and causing no-driveβleading to a costly rebuild. Replace whenever the gearbox is open; always inspect the mating thrust bearing and related surfaces.
Pro install tips
Pre-lube with fresh ATF, confirm flatness and finish, orient the face per service data, verify endplay with a dial indicator, and do not mix old and new races.
