Underdrive Planetary Ring Gear for Automatic Transmission βοΈ
This precision ring gear is a key hard part inside the underdrive planetary set of an automatic gearbox. It is needed to create the correct underdrive ratio, so the car can move off smoothly, pull strongly at low speed, and shift without harsh shock. When the transmission control unit commands underdrive, this ring gear works with the sun gear and planet gears to share torque, keep gear mesh stable, and transfer power through the carrier with minimal loss.

The ring gear is the outer toothed gear that the planet gears roll against. Under load, it must stay perfectly round and hard, so tooth contact stays even. Correct tooth geometry reduces noise, heat, and metal debris, helping the ATF stay clean longer.
What happens if itβs worn or broken ?
A damaged ring gear can cause whining or grinding, delayed engagement, slipping in lower ranges, harsh shifts, or complete loss of drive. Broken teeth often contaminate the whole unit with metal fragments, which can destroy clutches, bearings, and valve body parts if not repaired quickly.
