This precision gear assembly converts transmission output rotation into a clean vehicle-speed signal. Why you need it
Accurate road-speed data is vital for shift timing, cruise control, ABS logic (where applicable), and fuel calculation. Worn teeth or a hardened seal can throw everything off.
How it works β±οΈ
The output shaftβs drive gear meshes with this helical driven gear. The gear spins a cable or speed sensor rotor, turning rotation into a readable signal. Tooth count (color-coded on many Toyotas) sets the ratio to match final drive and tire size. An O-ring seals ATF at the case.
What happens if itβs broken β
Dead or jumpy speedometer, wrong odometer mileage, harsh/late shifts, inoperative cruise, warning lights, or ATF leak at the tail housing. Cracked plastic or rounded teeth are common causes.
Install tips
Match tooth count before fitting, replace the O-ring, lube with ATF, align the locator tab, and torque the retainer. If tire size has changed, re-check ratio.
