How it works βοΈ
Mounted on the mainshaft, the gear rotates on a needle bearing until the synchronizer locks it to the shaft. When selected, its teeth mesh with the counter gear to provide overdrive. Precision tooth form and hard surface finish keep shifts clean and minimize whine.
What happens if itβs damaged
Expect pop-out in 5th, a rising whistle at 80β110 km/h, higher cruise RPM, vibration, and sometimes no drive in 5th. Metal chips can contaminate oil, accelerate bearing wear, and lead to costly gearbox failure.
Fitment and install tips
Verify compatibility by VIN. Replace together with the synchro ring, hub springs, needle rollers, and circlip. Check end float and backlash, torque the mainshaft nut correctly, and refill with GL-4 75W-90. Drive gently for initial bedding-in.
