Counter Gear for Manual Transmission
This drivetrain component is a key part inside a Toyota manual gearbox. It is needed to transfer engine torque from the input side through the geartrain, helping create the correct speed and pulling power for each selected gear. Without a healthy counter gear, the transmission cannot deliver smooth, predictable drive to the wheels ⚙️.
How It Works
The counter gear sits on the countershaft and stays in constant mesh with other gears. As you shift, different gear pairs engage to change the ratio. The counter gear’s tooth profile and heat-treated surface keep contact stable, reduce noise, and handle heavy load during acceleration and engine braking.
Signs of Failure & What Happens If It Breaks
Common symptoms include whining or growling that changes with speed, hard shifting, vibration, and metal glitter in the oil. If the gear teeth chip or strip, it can lock the gearbox, damage bearings and synchros, or leave you with no drive at all ?. Replace early to protect the entire transmission.
