How it works
A precision conical ring with a friction face presses against the gear’s cone when you move the shifter. The fork drives the sleeve forward; the ring grips the cone, equalizing speeds. Once synchronized, the sleeve’s dogs engage the gear with minimal shock, reducing wear and heat. Designed for the mid-gear set in Toyota RWD/4WD boxes .
What happens if it’s worn or broken
Expect crunching into gear, heavy or notchy lever feel, delayed engagement, or pop‑out under load. Metal dust on the drain plug, glazed cones, and chipped dog teeth may follow. Continued use risks damaging the hub, sleeve, and gears—sometimes losing the affected gear entirely. Replace as a set, check clearances, and use correct 75W‑90 GL‑4/GL‑5 oil. Double‑clutch only to limp home.
