This 1st speed gear is a core internal part of a manual gearbox. It is needed to create the strongest torque multiplication when starting from a stop, climbing hills, or moving with heavy load. In real workshop terms, it’s the gear that helps the car roll smoothly without excessive clutch slipping.
How It Works ?
When you select first gear, the shift mechanism locks this gear into the power flow. The gear teeth mesh with its mating gear on the countershaft, turning engine RPM into usable pulling force at the wheels. Proper tooth profile and hardening reduce noise, heat, and wear during repeated take-offs.
Signs of Wear & What Happens If It Breaks ❗
A damaged 1st gear may cause grinding on engagement, popping out of gear, jerky launch, or a whining sound under load.
