This transmission gear is the key link that delivers smooth mid-range acceleration in your manual drivetrain. It is used most often in city driving and steady pulls, so it must hold load without slipping or grinding. When selected, it meshes with its matching gear pair and locks through the synchronizer hub, transferring torque from the input shaft to the output path with the correct ratio.

Third speed is designed to balance power and speed. It reduces engine strain, improves drivability, and keeps RPM under control when you move from low gears to cruising. A healthy gear set also protects bearings and synchros by keeping engagement clean and aligned.

How it works inside the gearbox

The synchro ring matches shaft speed, then the sleeve engages the gear’s dog teeth. Once fully engaged, the gear teeth carry torque under load. Proper tooth profile and hardening prevent heat buildup and metal shaving.
