Clean, fast shifts come from healthy synchros. This kit restores crisp gear engagement, cuts grinding, and protects the gearbox from premature wear. It’s the right fix when you feel notchiness, a crunch into 2nd, hesitation before a gear accepts the shift, or the lever refuses a quick downshift.
How it works
Inside a manual transmission, the gear and shaft rotate at different speeds. When you move the shifter, the sleeve pushes a brass baulk ring onto the gear’s cone. Friction equalizes speeds; blocker keys align the sleeve; then the dog teeth engage smoothly. Fresh rings give the correct friction and clearance for quick, quiet shifts .
What happens if it’s worn or broken
- Grinding on 1–2 or 3–4 changes
- Hard engagement or pop-out under load
- Cold-shift stiffness, burning smell, metal dust in oil
- Chipped dogs and hub/sleeve wear leading to rebuilds
