Manual Gearbox Synchronizer Baulk Ring
βοΈ This precision baulk ring is a key synchronizer part inside the manual transmission. It is needed to help match the speed of the gear and the shaft before the shift collar locks in. By balancing rotation speeds, it allows smooth, quiet shifting and protects the gear teeth from harsh engagement.
How It Works
When you move the shifter, the synchronizer hub pushes the ring against a tapered cone on the gear. Friction is created for a split second, slowing down or speeding up the gear until both sides spin at the same rate. Once synchronized, the sleeve slides over cleanly and the gear engages without grinding.
If This Part Is Worn or Broken
β A damaged ring can cause gear crunching, difficult shifts (especially 1stβ2nd), popping out of gear, and increased metal wear inside the transmission. Ignoring it may lead to chipped dog teeth, noisy operation, and costly gearbox rebuilds. Replacing the ring restores crisp shifting and extends transmission life.
