Rear Transfer Case Cover (4WD Housing Cap) ️
This rear cover seals the back side of the transfer case on Mitsubishi 4x4 drivetrains. It is needed to keep gear oil inside, protect internal gears and bearings from dust/water, and hold correct shaft alignment under load. A tight, flat sealing surface also helps the transfer case breathe and cool normally without losing lubricant.
How It Works ⚙️
The cover bolts to the transfer case housing and clamps a gasket or sealant bead to create an oil-tight barrier. It supports the rear area of the assembly, keeping components centered while the chain/gears transfer torque to the front and rear driveline. Proper sealing prevents pressure leaks and stops contamination that can damage precision surfaces.
What Happens If It’s Cracked or Leaking ❗
A damaged cover can cause oil seepage or fast leaks, leading to low lubricant level. That results in overheating, whining noise, rough shifting into 4H/4L, vibration, and eventually bearing or gear failure. If water enters during off-road driving, the oil emulsifies and wear accelerates quickly—often ending in full transfer case rebuild.
