    Neutral Position Sensor for Subaru Gearbox

    This transmission-mounted neutral switch is a small part with a big job. It tells the ECU and starting system when the gearbox is in neutral, improving safety and drivability. With a clean neutral signal, cold starts are smoother, idle control is steadier, and deceleration fuel cut works as designed for better economy.

    How it works ️

    Inside the threaded body is a spring-loaded plunger and contact set. When the selector is in neutral, the plunger closes the circuit and sends a ground/voltage signal through the harness to the ECU. The housing seals against oil and heat; a crush washer or O-ring keeps leaks away.

    Why you need it

    It prevents unintended starts in gear on certain setups and gives the ECU accurate state info for idle stabilization and emissions control. It’s a simple, reliable safety/logic switch.

    When it fails ⚠️

    Common signs: intermittent or no-start unless clutch is fully pressed, rough or hanging idle, stumble when stopping, poor fuel economy, and fault codes related to the neutral input. You may also notice awkward low-speed behavior after warm-up.

    Verify with a continuity test across the pins in and out of neutral. Inspect connector for oil ingress. Replace with the correct threaded sensor; tighten evenly and install a new seal. Clear codes and road-test.
