Inhibitor Switch / Transmission Range Sensor for Subaru
This safety-critical gear position switch tells the car which range you select (P–R–N–D) and allows the engine to start only in Park or Neutral. It also turns on the reverse lights and sends the correct signal to the transmission control unit for smooth, safe shifting. Replacing a worn unit restores proper start authorization, clear range display, and reliable drivability.
Why you need it
Over time, moisture, dirt, and wear on the internal contacts cause misreads. That leads to hard shifts, no-crank in Park, or random gear indicators. A fresh unit prevents transmission confusion and protects the starter and gearbox.
How it works ⚙️
Mounted on the selector shaft of the automatic gearbox, a multi-track contact plate changes circuits as you move the lever. The module sends a clean position signal to ECU/TCU, completes the starter interlock in P/N, and powers the backup lamp circuit. Sealed housing and precise indexing keep it accurate.
What happens if it fails ❗
- No crank in Park, starts only in Neutral
- Wrong or flickering gear display, harsh or delayed shifts, limp mode
- Reverse lights inoperative
- Check Engine light (codes like P0705/P0852)
- Poor fuel economy and safety risk at parking
Tech notes
