Automatic Transmission Range/Inhibitor Switch for Subaru 🔧
This switch tells the car and ECU which gear you selected (P, R, N, D). It blocks the starter unless the lever is in Park or Neutral, turns on reverse lights, and helps the transmission controller set the right pressure and shift timing. It is mounted on the selector shaft of the gearbox and connects to the wiring harness with a sealed plug.
How it Works 🚗
Inside the unit, contact tracks and a sliding wiper create specific electrical signals for each position. When aligned correctly, the ECU, TCM, and body modules receive a clear Park/Neutral signal and accurate gear data. Proper alignment is set by its slotted mounting holes.
Why You Need It ✅
Safety no-start outside P/N, reliable reverse lamps, correct PRND display, smooth shifts, and proper AWD logic. It also prevents unexpected movement and helps emissions readiness.
When It’s Faulty ⚠️
No-crank in Park, starts only in Neutral, wrong gear shown, reverse lamps dead, harsh shifts, limp mode, flashing AT light, or stored range-switch codes. Water ingress, corrosion, or misadjustment are common causes.
