Automatic Gearbox Range Inhibitor Switch

This small switch is a key safety and control part on Subaru automatic transmissions ⚙️. It tells the car exactly which position you selected (P, R, N, D and manual ranges), so the starter, reverse lights, and transmission logic work as designed.

Why this part is needed

The transmission range signal is used to prevent wrong starts and to keep shifting smooth. When the selector moves, the internal contacts inside the switch change position and send a clear “gear selected” message to the ECU/TCU.

How it works

The switch mounts on the selector shaft. As the shaft rotates, the switch aligns contact paths that complete specific circuits. This activates functions like starter enable in Park/Neutral and reverse lamp power in Reverse ✅.

What happens if it breaks

A faulty unit may cause a no-crank condition, wrong gear indication, reverse lights not working, harsh or confused shifting, limp mode, or random PRND flashing. In some cases the car may only start in one position or stall when shifting—dangerous and frustrating ❗
