Why you need it
Without a healthy glow control relay, pre‑heating is weak or absent. Proper pre‑glow and after‑glow shorten cranking, reduce white smoke, protect the battery, and extend glow plug life. It’s a small part with a big impact on reliability and fuel economy.
How it works
The ECU or glow timer triggers the relay. Its internal coil closes heavy‑duty contacts, feeding high current to the glow rail for a set time based on coolant temperature. After‑glow keeps plugs warm briefly after start to stabilize idle and cut diesel knock .
What happens if it’s broken
Hard cold starts, long cranking, rough idle, white smoke, and a glow light that behaves oddly. You may hear rapid clicking or no click at all. A stuck‑open relay starves plugs; a stuck‑closed one overheats plugs, blows fuses, or drains the battery. Replace at first signs.
