Automatic Transmission Speed Sensor
This smart sensor is a key input for the automatic gearbox control. It measures transmission shaft speed and sends a clean signal to the TCM/ECU, helping the vehicle choose the right gear at the right time. Without accurate speed feedback, the transmission can’t “think” correctly, so shift quality and fuel economy suffer.
Why this part is needed
The gearbox uses speed data to control shift timing, torque converter lock-up, and line pressure. This keeps acceleration smooth, protects clutches, and reduces heat inside the transmission.
How it works
Inside the sensor, a magnetic or Hall element detects passing teeth on a rotating tone wheel. The sensor converts this movement into electrical pulses. The control unit reads pulse frequency as speed and adjusts solenoids to match driving load and road conditions ⚙️.
What happens if it fails
A faulty unit may cause harsh shifting, delayed engagement, erratic gear changes, limp mode, or a speedometer/shift indicator acting strange. Continued driving can overheat fluid and accelerate clutch wear, leading to costly transmission repairs.
