Cabin Blower Motor Resistor (HVAC Fan Speed Control) ?❄️
This small but critical HVAC electrical part is what lets your interior blower fan run at different speeds instead of only “off” or “full blast”. It’s needed because the climate control system must fine-tune airflow for comfort, fast defogging, and stable A/C performance.
How it works ⚡
The unit sits in the blower air stream to stay cool. Inside, it uses resistance (and on some versions, thermal protection) to drop voltage to the blower motor on low and medium settings. When you select a fan speed, the resistor routes power through specific paths so the motor turns slower or faster smoothly.
What happens when it fails ?
A failing resistor commonly causes the blower to work only on the highest speed, lose certain speeds, blow intermittently, or stop completely. If ignored, overheating can damage the connector, melt wiring, or strain the blower motor, leading to bigger HVAC repair bills.
Why technicians replace it
- Restores proper fan speed steps
- Improves defrost/defog response
- Prevents heat damage to plugs and harness
