    How it works

    On a 1–2 upshift, the baulk ring rides the gear cone to create controlled friction and equalize speeds. Once synchronized, the dog teeth line up and the shift sleeve slides in smoothly. Oil grooves meter lubrication so the ring bites firmly without glazing, delivering fast, quiet gear changes.

    If the ring is worn or cracked ⚠️

    You may get grind into 2nd, hard engagement when cold, or pop‑out under load. Delayed sync hammers the dog teeth, drops metal into the oil, and speeds bearing wear. Heat and chatter can scar the gear cone, turning a small part failure into a full rebuild.

    Service tips

    Replace during clutch or gearbox service. Check cone taper and hub teeth; renew related blockers if play is out of spec. Use GL‑4 manual oil—GL‑5 can attack yellow metals. Set endplay and road‑test; if crunch remains, inspect shifter bushings and clutch release.
