Exhaust Cam Oil Control Valve (VVT) ?️

This small electro-hydraulic valve is a key part of the engine’s variable valve timing system. It is needed to meter clean engine oil to the exhaust cam phaser, so the ECU can advance or retard exhaust valve timing. How it works βš™οΈ

The ECU sends a PWM signal to the solenoid inside the valve. A sliding spool opens or closes oil passages, directing pressurized oil into the cam phaser chambers. More oil flow = faster cam angle change; less flow = cam returns toward base timing. A fine internal screen helps stop debris from reaching the phaser.

When it fails ?

If the valve sticks, clogs, or shorts electrically, oil flow becomes incorrect. You may get rough idle, weak acceleration, higher fuel use, rattling at start-up, and a check engine light (common VVT timing codes). Continued driving can overwork the cam phaser and speed up timing chain and cam wear. Regular oil changes are the best protection ?.
